Experimental Animation

About

Continuing the exploratory legacy of the long-established Animation MA, the Experimental Animation pathway explores a spectrum of animated films and moving image technologies. We encourage the development of creative and critical thinking, research skills and expanded discipline expertise. In their graduation works our students have challenged the boundaries of traditional animation and moving image in their practice in process, aesthetic expression, variation on (non-)narrative forms and the spectrum of abstraction to mimetic representation. Some are pursuing interests in exploring alternate screen platforms or installation and exhibition. Themes include animated ‘worlds’, speculative futures, relationships, the body, universal philosophies, virtual travels and altered perception. The works produced by students span a continuum of genres and approaches, from the more traditional, narrative to experimental, and more expanded forms of animation.
