Curating Contemporary Art (MA)

Seulki Yoo

In the meantime… is an accumulation of exchanges, anecdotes and personal resonances. It speaks to moments missed and moments that have remained, sustained between Somers Town and Camden Art Centre.

The uncertainty of the pandemic has become an everyday state of being. Seeking comfort has taken many forms – we may turn to the solace of a book, listen to music, or a podcast. As we journey through these unprecedented times, we have looked to the potential of companionship, envisaged as standing side by side. In the meantime… acts not as a guide or map, but instead runs parallel to the public.

Without predetermining the narrative that the programme will explore, we wish to leave space for the fluidity of storytelling, rather than appropriating this knowledge or experience as our own. We have invited contributors to contemplate small moments of exchange that speak to moments missed and moments that have remained in the area between Somers Town in North West London and neighbouring Camden Art Centre.

In the meantime… is a directory, an interactive PDF and a collection of sound recordings, curated by Seulki Yoo, Ted Targett, Lolita Pearl Gendler, Olivia Abando, Johnnie Valantine and Isadora Graham in partnership with Camden Art Centre.

Curating Contemporary Art (MA)
Seulki Yoo

Seulki Yoo is a thinker who focuses on how curating can make art be more engaged with the public. Thinking through the notion of curatorial as an immaterial collaborative process of knowledge exchange that enables critical dialogue, her research investigates curatorial practices which critically speak to the reality and social issues.

Her dissertation titled Queer Feminism Within the Curatorial, explored the intersection of feminism and queer, which led her to investigate how queer feminism works as a tool for implementing an alternative curatorial strategy. As part of her research, she explored how queer feminism manifests within the art scene as a curatorial methodology and as a form of thematic development, while at the same time contemplating what queer feminism means to society as a whole as well as to contemporary curating.

Her curatorial interests are reflected in her graduate project In the meantime..., an online public programme in partnership with Camden Art Centre. Influenced by the uncertainty of the pandemic, the project looks to the potential of companionship which runs in between Somers Town, London and neighbouring Camden Art Centre and, by extension, any areas that audiences belong to. Running parallel with the audience, the project leaves a space for the fluidity of storytelling rather than predetermined experiences of the area.

Prior to coming to the RCA, Seulki studied Photography at Seoul Institute of The Arts in Korea and later worked as a fashion photographer. After moving to London, she studied Contemporary Art History at Goldsmiths, University of London and during that time, she co-curated Show Me Your Data, an exhibition which navigated data-related matters.
