Curating Contemporary Art (MA)

Isadora Graham

In the meantimeis an accumulation of exchanges, anecdotes and personal resonances. It speaks to moments missed and moments that have remained, sustained between Somers Town and Camden Art Centre.

The uncertainty of the pandemic has become an everyday state of being. Seeking comfort has taken many forms – we may turn to the solace of a book, listen to music, or a podcast. As we journey through these unprecedented times, we have looked to the potential of companionship, envisaged as standing side by side. In the meantime… acts not as a guide or map, but instead runs parallel to the public.

Without predetermining the narrative that the programme will explore, we wish to leave space for the fluidity of storytelling, rather than appropriating this knowledge or experience as our own. We have invited contributors to contemplate small moments of exchange that speak to moments missed and moments that have remained in the area between Somers Town in North-West London and neighbouring Camden Art Centre.

In the meantime… is a directory, an interactive PDF and a collection of sound recordings. Curated by Isadora Graham, Ted Targett, Lolita Pearl Gendler, Olivia Abando, Johnnie Valantine and Seulki Yoo, in partnership with Camden Art Centre.

Isadora Graham

Isadora Graham is an Italo-English independent curator and creative practitioner based in London. Inspired by a commons-based approach, she defines curating as a collaborative and open practice that should be allowed to ferment over time and cater to varying needs. She is interested in developing nuanced forms of ethical instituting conceived around pertinent contemporary social, political, and economic concerns.

Her current work is framed by the need to challenge pre-determined conditions set by the market-driven world by exploring and uncovering the liminal spaces found within the city. Responding to everyday moments of exchange, a presentist mode of production fuels her work, giving voice to the social power formed through the co-curation of moments, where the details of every day life are not mundane thoughts but a driving force for creative action.

In 2021, whilst at the Royal College of Art, Isadora co-curated In the meantime... a public programme in partnership with Camden Art Centre, conceived to operate as a companion piece to a globally isolated moment. Taking the form in part of a small interactive publication, In the meantime... collaborated with nine artists, activists and writers on reflecting on the meaning of belonging, orientation and companionship, and is an invitation into the intimacies and hyper-localities of Somers Town NW1.

Prior to joining the RCA, Isadora studied Architecture at Central Saint Martins where her practice centralised around ideas of creative place- making, a philosophy which continues to inform her curatorial practice to date.
