Lungeness

A woman in a pink bikini is staring at her shiny diamond wedding ring, floating on a swimming pool, enjoying the sunshine. She can smell the taste of the sun, feel the heat of the dry hot desert wind. It is her favourite weather just because she was born in a desert city and this reminds her of her childhood. Her husband does not want to go back to that poor country with her so she never thought she can still experience this environment. She rubbed her eyes, trying to wake herself up. Looking back at the cottage they bought. Meanwhile her tired husband behind yawns, holding a sleepin-mask he just bought at local sleeping store, trying to close the curtains and prepare to sleep. It is 11PM and he has not sleep for more than 20 hours. Travel in honeymoon has always been sweet but not for him at that moment. He grew up in this gloomy country, he likes sunshine.. but not this much.

This is not a romantic story about time difference. They are enjoying the benefit from the huge building behind them, proud local people, ‘the candle factory’, the Dungeness nuclear power station. Tourists like them choose to embrace fake sunshine as part of the daylight project., and so do we Lungeness people.

'Wellcome' to Lungeness — Here is the first 24-hour daylight in the world.

Sun tower — We built up a sun tower to shine on specific area by specific angle. All power supply comes from the nuclear power station. At the centre of daylight area we have the church of light. For those people who live in Lungeness: Local people live in local bungalow so they can enjoy 80%of shadow and 20% of light. For tourists we prepared hotel Lungeness for them which could enjoy 80% of light and 20% of shadow.

Lungeness tour map — We made an unique one day journey through the whole area. Our journey includes five moments. From the entrance we are going to see church of light , grave of nuclear waste, lighthouse and finally the meditation square in front of our beautiful sea.

Lungeness blue — All the water we use in Lungeness is from purified cooling water. It has charming blue colour so we call it Lungeness blue.

LIGHTISM — After we built up the sun tower,we have the freedom to enjoy the endless sunshine. Many of us start to believe we will never worry about our food supply. We can grow huge plants if we want. We have the freedom to control the nature.

Comments — Comments are very important for us.

Entrance — Cooling water flows below you, has charming reflection of light.The ceiling is made from corrugated metal panel, has sightly different reflection from the water. That means like Lungeness, one small change will brings you a surreal world. Behind the wall, is what you’ve dreaming about, the true Lungeness.

Nuclear worship — The church is where we worshiping the nuclear sun. Somebody says it’s a fake sun but for us we believe nothing is more real than it.

Nuclear gardening — We can here enjoy our life all thanks to the nuclear power station. It’s the most important part of our life.In Lungeness we have tradition to decorate our garden by using industrial elements.

Lightism church — When you walk downstairs, standing at the center of church. Looking up at the sky, it’s the most exciting moment. You can see our sun moves above you and see day and night at the same time, as background.

Radioactive city — People all worry about the nuclear waste and so do we. We don’t want our descendant dig deep underground and find a radioactive city.

Grave — Here all used nuclear rods will have a decent funeral and reborn as candles. All candles are numbered so we will not mess them up. You can pick up one yourself and enjoy the glowing of nuclear fuel. Behind the concrete wall there are many coffins. Every used nuclear rod will be allocate to a specific coffin, through the glass windows you can see they all glowing together. They were dead but at this moment I feel they are alive.

Pull down old lighthouse — 10 years ago, we pulled down the lighthouse because we don’t need a lighthouse anymore, Lungeness itself already became the lighthouse of the world. And after that we made it into a huge kaleidoscope. We wanna change outside people’s attitude toward our nuclear power station.

Corridor

Peep at nuclear power station — Please enjoy looking through the tiny hole on the wall. The nuclear power station is not just a huge grey box anymore, it becomes so beautiful. All used nuclear candle will be put in the pool below. So if you come back several years later, you can still find the one you put in today. And you will also see the glowing more stronger. So I think the lighthouse actually grow with us all, and will never disappear

First time we light it up

Meditation square — This is where we release Lungeness blue into the sea. You can see giant fish through the glass wall. Some people think fish grow that big because of mutation caused by cooling water. But the fish was already that big even before we had nuclear power station. I strongly recommend you sit close to the glass wall so you can see clearly how artificial cooling water and natural sea water mix together. We Lungeness people we already gave you our answer: we think science is the religion of modernity.
