Curating Contemporary Art (MA)

Zifei Ge

At Fulfilment Services Ltd. we begin at the logistics of the systemised supply chain: algorithm to ‘click to buy’to factory worker to shipping container to gig delivery driver to momentarily satisfied and fulfilled consumer; from there we link, de-link, and re-link. With Gasworks as the nexus of a series of public interventions, we invite international artists Arvid&Marie, DNA, Florence Jung, and Frank WANG Yefeng to respond to the contemporary provocation of an anti-fulfilment narrative.

Under existing infrastructures of production and consumption, networks are constantly in multi-directional movement building new needs once existing ones have been satisfied. In an ever-expanding and dissatisfying system we ask crucially: is capitalism fulfilling consumers or are consumers fulfilling capitalism?

The four new artist commissions situate themselves in and around London on billboards, delivery vehicles and digitally on an e-commerce platform and website. These works come together under the unified spirit of corroding existing networks of dissemination. At Fulfilment Services Ltd. our disseminated medium is very much part of our message: join us in imagining alternative realities of fulfilment by interrogating the chain of production, networks of transportation, and the extortionist quality of fabricated needs.

Fulfilment Services Ltd. was produced in partnership with Gasworks, and supported by Jack Arts and Print&Digital.

Zifei Ge

Zifei Ge is an independent curator and researcher based in London and Hangzhou. Her curatorial practice is rooted in her keen interest in network-building, cultural exchange, and alternative history writing. She cares for the marginalised communities and invisible voices and rethinks the politics of discipline, system, and institution in the alternative narratives and cross-disciplinary collaborations.

Her research on the institutionalisation and its critiques is expanded in her graduate dissertation, On the Creation of Nonslip Realities: Rethinking the Triennials between Hegemony and Disobedience, in which she researches and analyses the tension between biennials as hegemonic machines and sites of resistance, with a particular focus on the perennial exhibitions in the South Chinese art scene in the 2000s. In the essay, she navigates the discourse of post-colonial curation with an investigation on the social powers and relations behind the storytelling narratives, examines the complexities beyond the binary of cooperation and resistance.

For the graduate project, Zifei co-curated Fulfilment Services Ltd., a curatorial project developed in partnership with Gasworks. The project explores the implications of techno-capitalism for the widespread supply-and-demand networks that fulfil consumer needs and desires. The curatorial team utilises existing dissemination networks to work towards an alternative imagination and rethink the capitalist logistics disguised as the mechanical supply chain of fulfilment.

She has recently curated Emerging as Material, a group show presenting the experiments in material art. The show explores the interdependency between natural materials and physical experiences and examines the artistic engagement with materials in the age of industrial production. She is also the co-founder of the online-based artist community ArtPicnic, which constructs an interdisciplinary artist/designer network through interviews, salons, and seminars.
