Painting (MA)
Dolly Yiping Pan

My creation started to concentrate on the selection of different media four years ago. You could interpret my works like a huge container with different media elements. I am eager to explore the impact of traumatic experiences on people and how these subconscious minds are reflected in their dreams.

I wanted to stimulate the audience’s feelings in a limited space. And I prefer them to use their own consciousness to interpret my works. I always feel that the creative process is a process of emotional release, and I hope that more people can experience this feeling through my works.

The creative process carries lots of pressure for me. It’s not only about my personal feelings, it's also about how to help audience to face their feelings better, I treat this as my aim pretty seriously.

Your Little Monster series (2018-)

I’ve been working on this series from the end of 2018, my monsters have always been there for me. This series recorded my current mood state though the process of creation. They brought me more inspiration for my future works. Every time when I look back on it, my frankness and loyalty to myself become a virtuous circle. I’ve been trying to find the ‘right stage’ match with the ‘right Dolly’ for a while. Then I realised that if the creative process is completely controlled by emotion, the result is uncontrollable. Good creation itself requires the ability to control emotions. In this way, I can find a balance between creation and personal life.

Bye! Troutbeck series (2021-)

Bye! Troutbeck aims to capture certain moments past in my life. In the end of series, how I remember and perceive these moments becomes the final work. It’s a process called ‘re-memory’ ‘re-creative’ and ‘re-mark’ for me.

I work through with different media, different colour choices, which basically means that I offer different feedback or answers for the moment that I’m working in. I think that’s what I’ve been looking for——a primal and true answer to myself. The overall feelings from each specific moment (each work) in this series will not change at all, but those small fragments inside the paintings always bring a new sensory experience to me.

On the other hand, I always emphasise how important it is that the audience can explore my works using their own feelings. Different people and different roles always bring new energy to my practice.

Hidden in my mind

They always

Protect me quietly

Guard my little secret
