THE DREAM VIEW

The Dream View is a design collection consisting of three different products. A chair, a sphere and a lamp. Each of the products are designed to explore how design can improve mental wellbeing - by daydreaming and observing the sky. Daydreaming is an inward attention and reflection. It's a meditative state where we learn, grow and come up with new ideas. And looking at the sky is an excellent space to drift off.

“Everything the brain interprets, it interprets in context.

(...) When we are looking directly up at the sky and we are missing our normal frame of the horizon and the cityscape we are just seeing the light it self. What that causes this is an out of context experience where we feel like we are now part of that atmosphere. We are tied right into that.” David Eagleman, neuro scientist

The collection aim to slow us down and connect, by reflecting, projecting and replicating the sky. It's accessible in three different locations - outdoor, by the window and indoor - designed to be a part of our brief everyday routines.

DESIGN IMPROVES LIFE QUALITY

The Dream View project started in a complicated time in the mid of the pandemic where people developing depression and anxiety were in an alarming progressive state at a global level. Having a deep empathy for human centric design and an interest in how design and atmospheres can support our mental wellbeing I wanted to address this pressing issue, by designing a collection of products that try to slow us down and connect.

Personally I had just started on therapy myself. And with inspiration from CBT and design principles from Healing Architecture, I wanted to empathise with people who would benefit from mindful moments of reflection. Principles from Healing Architecture say that close connection to nature and having a view are essential elements to our wellbeing, and in the pandemic windows gained a whole new symbolic meaning of hope and compassion, and spending time in nature had a therapeutic impact on people.

The Dream View contains these elements, giving people a piece of the sky to synchronise with. The aim of the collection is to offer people new experiences and perspectives of how we perceive and relate to the world - and us-selves. By designing products and atmospheres that support and address how we live and feel is how I believe that design can improve life quality.

THE CHAIR

THE SPHERE

THE CHAIR

“Remember to look up at the stars and not down at your feet. Try to make sense of what you see and wonder about what makes the universe exist. Be curious. And however difficult life may seem, there is always something you can do and succeed at. It matters that you don't just give up" Stephen Hawking

The chair is situated in public parks and natural settings, and has the quotation "Look up & wonder" lacercut in the bottom of the seat. The polished stainless steel reflects the sky and merge with the surroundings. The curvature of the chair makes us look at the sky in a restful position, allowing us to connect with the sky. There is both a chair and a bench in the series, where the bench allows us to look at the clouds and stars in the company of each-other and the chair allows self introspection.

THE SPHERE

“Describe what remains: that which we generally don't notice, which doesn't call attention to itself, which is of no importance; what happens when nothing happens, what passes when nothing passes, except time, people, cars and clouds?" Georges Perec, The infra ordinary

The sphere is placed near the window where a lens projects and objectifies the view of the sky inside the glass sphere - only by the use of daylight. The sphere is a way of looking at our looking, where you can choose and direct your point of view. The lens creates a 3 dimensional upside-down projection of the view it's pointed at, just like our eyes do - only that the brain flips the image for us.

THE LAMP

"(...) Just the same way you see a dear that gets frozen by the headlights of a car, we have the same primal relation to light when we look into a fire. It tends to engender this thinking. It's not a thinking with words but it's still thinking. So the kind of wordless thought of the theta state. We kind of drift of" James Turrell

The sky changes our mood and affects how we feel, live and sense our surroundings. The lamp is hanging indoor as a substitute for when we don't a have view to the heaven outdoor. A rotating textile is replicating the transitional atmospheric light and colours of the sky throughout the day, giving us an opportunity to synchronise with the time and space we live in. The lamp will be launched at London Design Festival.

RESEARCH & INSIGHT FROM DREAMERS - WHAT DO PEOPLE GAIN FROM THE SKY?

The research explores peoples' relationship and experience of the sky, and also what people dream of.

People (the Dreamers) both send pictures of the sky, describing a feeling, thought and a statement about the sky. They have also made their own personal Dream View drawings where they afterward had to describe the most important elements in the drawing while being reflective about their personal state and view.

A special thanks to all of the Dreamers who shared such personal insight.

THE DREAMERS' PERSONAL PICTURES & RELATION WITH THE SKY

Findings from the Dreamers' observation of the sky was that the sky reflected their emotional states. Both good and bad emotions. People make their own narratives about what they see and how they feel in the current situation they are in while they glaze at the view. And at other times, when not consciously analysing ones emotional states, a view gives people moments of wordless thoughts and peace of mind. It comforts and amazes us - when we give us-selves the time to look up.

THE DREAMERS' IMAGINATIVE DREAM VIEW DRAWINGS

Peoples' Dream View drawings showed that people have a deep connection to nature and natural sensory elements. The Dreamers views gave them a feeling of happiness, relaxation and freedom, and it made them feel more connected to loved ones - and themselves. In cases where the dream view wasn't solely positive the view made people constructive about the situation and made them want to act towards behavioural change.

RUNNER UP

Silhouette Cutlery won the Runner Up Price at The Cutlers' Company 2021

The Judges statement: "Fluid lines and functionality characterises this aesthetically pleasing cutlery"

SILHOUETTE

Cutlery is probably the most intimate object and most useful tool we use in our home - every single day. Therefore, they are sometimes also hard to notice, because using them and eating breakfast, lunch and dinner is very habituated.

Silhouette cutlery offers a new playful and elegant shape, that invites you in for sensory discovery and engagement. One single shape converted into a series of cutlery consisting of a fork, knife and spoon, playing with traditional perception of our everyday utensils.  By using this symphony of silhouettes I hope that the aesthetic and sensory experience of dining will be elevated, making people become even more present in the moment, and engaged in each others company.
