Statement

In my paintings and collages I combine folkloristic and fairy-tale motifs with fraktur typeface, and historical references. At times ready-made objects are also used in order to understand how different display strategies can affect meaning. Often in my work the innocently cute appears potentially threatening; the domestic sphere takes on an uncanny dimension.

My paintings look for a synergy when merging layers of figures, objects, and text. I sometimes draw directly on the raw canvas, supplementing the paint with quick improvised gestural brushstrokes. My collage works on the other hand, allow for overt intersections. They bring together different materials and identities, such as the collected GDR paper from the 1960s and 1970s. By unpacking nostalgic memories and cultural traditions, I hope to create stories within stories.
