Innes Evans

Innes Evans is a design-focused animator, musician and artist, based in London. Graduating with a First Class (Hons) in BA Filmmaking at Kingston School of Arts, Evans went on to study MA Animation at the Royal College of Art, where he is currently refining his practice. With an ever-growing interest in music, the artist creates experimental audiovisual pieces and designs through merging a wide range of disciplines and techniques, such as 3D animation.

Co-running an electronic music label named Panel Audio, Evans explores the opportunity to work with musicians that inspire visual thought. On top of designing many record covers for the label, the artist creates short animations to promote their monthly show on Reprezent Radio (107.3FM). This reactive bond between sound and visual continues to grasp Evans’ interest as he explores more meaningful and personal projects in his final year at the Royal College of Art.

Innes Evans is especially interested in visual depictions of concepts and thoughts that hold no physical value. Starting his MA, he developed a fascination with visualising the internet as an environment and the online life within it. More recently his focus turned to a project that aims to physicalise thoughts on emotional numbness. These experimental shorts have no familiar structure and narrative, challenging traditional methods.

Thoughts on My Current State is a short film that attempts to visualise feelings in their absence, as opposed to their presence. Emotional numbness is common within peoples’ mental health, yet a feeling of nothingness is inexpressive and lacks any physical presence, making it difficult to describe.

Although most of Evans’ previous works have been made for online viewing, the artist recently exhibited a film at Venice Biennale as an installation. Having done so, he wishes to explore this avenue further, and is focusing on incorporating more interactive elements into his forthcoming productions, making them suitable for gallery spaces.

'Thoughts On My Current State' is an attempt to visualize feelings in their absence, as opposed to their presence. Emotional numbness is a common occurrence within peoples’ mentality, yet a feeling of nothingness remains a challenge to describe, perhaps due to its lack of a physical presence.

From my own research and personal experience, it has proven easier to explain the impacts of this numbing in a more metaphorical, aural and visual way. One user from an online forum explains that it’s “like watching life happening in front of you and not for you”.

'Groundwork' is the project made in my first year at the RCA; an experimental short depicting the internet as a much desirable form of escapism from everyday life.

The ever-changing worlds and experiences discovered online provide a welcome form of relief to the repetitive daily cycle on earth, that people grow familiar too.

This project was inspired by the research I made in writing my dissertation. I became fascinated by the idea that man-made societal categories, like gender, could be overcome through the creation of avatars online. These avatars could exist on any platform, from social media to video games.
