School of Architecture

The Lucid Veil, Awakening from Smoothness, Paige Stapleton, MA Architecture, 2021.

Dean, School of Architecture – Dr Adrian Lahoud

The School of Architecture is an ongoing praxis around form, desire and the limits of social imagination. It is an experiment that moves between two poles: the life of form and the form of life. The reciprocity between these poles became especially pertinent this year. While working at home and living at work, study has occurred in a new kind of relation to domestic life, one that has changed it. Space drew closer punctuated by portals of escape: screens, windows and tiles. The sombre, often introspective key of the last year was especially attuned to shifts in personal spaces, once used for leisure and relaxation, now forced to become work spaces. Rooms, homes and neighbourhoods circumscribed new limits around daily behaviour. Insignificant elements acquired new importance as lockdown restrictions continued, eventually finding their way into student work expressed as interests in domesticity, care, maintenance and time, but also as lines of flight into the delirium of digital environments.

It is no understatement to say that the work produced by our graduating cohort took place under unprecedented circumstances. The last academic year is a kind of pivot between a pre and post pandemic era with all of the changes that have come with it. Even if it is not clear yet, this makes our graduating cohort one of the most important in generations.

Straddling two different eras, despite formidable challenges, they have crossed between worlds. Long may they change them.
