Beyond the Binary

Wednesday 30 June 17:00 (GMT +0)

School of Arts & HumanitiesPhotography (MA)
Estimated Duration: 1 hour 30 min

Writer and filmmaker Juliet Jacques joins Emil Lombardo, Ning Zhou, Melanie Issaka and Charlotte Yao to explore the paradox of representation, how visibility is at once a celebration and a risk for marginalised identities and communities. Through the discussion, these artists will explore the ways photography and creative practice might be employed to challenge the white cis hetero-patriarcal gaze or simply just ignore it completely.

Juliet Jacques (b. Redhill, Surrey, 1981) is a writer and filmmaker based in London. She has published three books: Rayner Heppenstall: A Critical Study (Dalkey Archive Press, 2007); Trans: A Memoir (Verso, 2015), based on her 'Transgender Journey' for the Guardian (2010-12); and a collection of short stories, Variations (Influx Press, 2021). Her journalism, essays and short fiction have appeared in numerous publications; her short films have screened in galleries and festivals worldwide. She also hosts the political arts programme Suite (212) on Resonance 104.4fm, and teaches at the Royal College of Art and elsewhere.
